I (Dave) used to come to Shortys to sing karaoke frequently. Those of you that know me know I like to mingle good ol’ country and Elvis together. That’s what was so attractive about Shortys, you could come and participate in a singing frenzy and fill your hunger with food, fun, and friendship. I never thought, however, I would reacquaint with someone at Shortys, that would turn my life upside down and that shares my same ambitions.
I (Barb) didn’t exactly come to Shortys to hear Dave serenade me intentionally, but I did happen to get to hear him sing. A friend of mine convinced me to go to Shortys for a fun night out. It was here, at Shortys, that Dave and I were reacquainted. We had met casually at another time but the reunion between Dave and I here, is what adds to the history of this bar and grill.
When Barb and I found out about the closure of Shortys, we didn’t hesitate to look into taking over such a “historical” place. On July 11, 2008 we reopened Shortys doors to the community. We have been fulfilling our dreams ever since.
Shortly after we opened Shortys, I (Barb) called my parents to inform them of our accomplishment. Coincidently, my parents, Bill and Donna Solivais met for the first time at a Shorty’s in 1948. Now, this was a grocery store in Gary, Indiana but the chances of all of us meeting at a Shortys seemed to be more than just luck. Once I told Dave about my mom and dad’s story, we knew we had done the right thing. We welcome you whole heartedly to our little piece of history. We hope that you will help build our history and “coincidences,” along with your own, here at Shortys, for many years to come. Come sing, eat, drink, and play at Shortys Sports Grill, a coincidental meeting place.
